I have two daughters, I’ve done my fair share of princess gear and birthday tiaras. No princess affair is complete without a cardboard crown.
There are actually many different ways to use this crown template. I’ve done the full headband tiara. I’ve also done just a mini crown with an elastic band that goes around the chin. You can even just clip these on with a hairpin. These are quite versatile in terms of how you want to wear them.
In terms of material, I have a lot of glitter cardstock around so I made mine with this. There is no need to get fancy materials to make a cute crown, you likely already have some of the materials sitting around the house. Worst-case scenario, just reuse a paper bag and either paint it a different color or line it with colorful tissue paper.
The base cardboard crown template is included for free in my resource library but there are endless ideas for how to accessorize. I love making paper flowers so I’ve attached some of these in this last paper crown I made for my baby’s first birthday.

Cardstock – I used this laminated glitter cardstock. I love that it is laminated so the glitter pieces don’t fall off and get on everything.
Glue dots – You can also use a hot glue gun but I love these permanent hold glue dots because they are so easy to work with.
Gold elastic – I found this is the easiest way to attach this and works for kids of all ages.
I like using my Cricut cutting machine for projects like this. However, these crown designs are simple enough to cut by hand. If you are going to add any floral accessories, I would consider using a cutting machine to make the whole thing go faster.
There is actually a glitter cardstock setting with the Cricut. I found it was well calibrated and worked for this brand of cardstock.
The trickiest part of this was sizing it properly. To make a mini crown that sits on top of my one-year-old’s head, I could get away with a 11-inch long strip (the standard length of letter sized paper).
For a slightly bigger crown, I had to break up the king crown template into two pieces to end up with a larger circumference.
This wasn’t much of a problem as I just cut out extra glue tabs and then attached the two pieces together.
